Dido building Carthage

Dido, the queen and founder of Carthage, is on the left. She is surveying the classical architecture of her as yet uncompleted city. This painting is one of Turner's most ambitious imitations of the 17th-century French painter Claude. As requested on Turner's will, two works by Claude also hung in this room.
