Ulysses deriding Polyphemus - Homer's Odyssey

The subject is taken from Homer's Odyssey. Ulysses and his companions have blinded the one-eyed giant Polyphemus, seen in the mountains to the left. The rising sun shows the just discernible outlines of the horses pulling the chariot of the sun god, Apollo. Transparent sea nymphs swim in front of the ship.
