Evening on the Lake

The elegiac mood of this painting is a common feature of Corot's late work. A boat comes into shore on a peaceful evening. The branches of the tree reach out across the still water. The red cap of the boatman is typical of the artist, who often introduced a note of orange or red as a highlight into a landscape. The work was once owned by the artist Frederic, Lord Leighton.
