The Friedrichsgracht, Berlin

The view is taken from a house in Wallstrasse, looking across the Friedrichsgracht, a canal that ran through the centre of the old town. Both the Friedrichsgracht and Wallstrasse still exist. This may have been intended as a preparatory study for a larger painting, which would explain why no figures appear in the scene.
