Pindar and Ictinus

Ingres greatly admired the artists and poets of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds. Here he depicts the Greek lyric poet Pindar, holding a lyre, and behind him, Ictinus, the architect of the Parthenon in Athens. The painting derives from a much larger allegorical composition by Ingres.
