The Virgin in Prayer

The Virgin's face is largely in shadow, her eyes downcast, highlighting the hands joined in prayer. Her blue cloak is painted in costly ultramarine pigment. The subject of the Virgin praying was developed in the 15th century and was intended to aid private devotions. Sassoferrato produced many versions of the composition; this is among the finest.
