King Philip (reigned 1621-1665) wears a suit of unusual splendour, and the painting may be intended to record the particular occasion on which he wore it. He wears the badge of the Order of the Golden Fleece on a chain. The portrait, which is superbly preserved, is one of the few signed by the painter.
