Allegory of Grammar
Grammar, as described in a famous emblem book (Ripa's Iconologia, 1593), is shown watering plants. This stands for grammar cultivating young minds. Her scroll is inscribed in Latin: 'a meaningful utterance which can be written down, pronounced in the proper way.' This painting was one of a series of the seven liberal arts.
