The Rape of the Sabine Women

Seated on his throne on the right, the Roman king Romulus oversees his soldiers as they carry off the Sabine women. In his Lives, the ancient Greek biographer Plutarch tells how Romulus invited the neighbouring Sabines to attend games in Rome so that he could capture their women. You can see the gladiators competing in the background.
