A Lion Hunt

In the centre a terrified rider is pulled from his horse by a lion, while men with lances and sabres battle to save him. Beneath the horse's hooves another hunter lies dead. Rubens used energetic and swiftly painted sketches like this one to explore alternative compositional ideas. Here, he repeated the central group in a slightly different pose at the upper right.
