A Panoramic View of Haarlem
In the 1660s and early 1670s Ruisdael painted a series of so-called Haarlempjes. These panoramic views of the countryside surrounding the city of Haarlem often include the bleaching fields near the city, as is the case here. Most of the picture plane is given over to cloud formations drifting across the vast sky overarching the landscape.
