An Italian Courtyard

When Jan Weenix painted this work he was working closely with his father, Jan Baptist Weenix, in Utrecht. The elder Weenix had visited Italy and painted scenes of Italian courtyards and seaports bathed in sunlight. These subjects were developed and refined by his son. The sculpture in the background is based on Michelangelo's Rebellious Slave in the Louvre.
