Although the sitter's identity is not known, he is portrayed as a man of elegance and sophistication. The relief at lower right shows Divine Love triumphing over a blindfolded cupid symbolising Earthly Love. The portrait may have been commissioned at the time of the sitter's betrothal or marriage.
