The Watering Place

A piping shepherd plays for a milkmaid, herdsmen and cattle. Here, Rubens recalls the landscapes of his Flemish predecessors, building on their realism to create a more majestic, almost mythic environment. Thomas Gainsborough saw this painting in 1758, and was inspired to paint his own version of the scene (also in the National Gallery).
