Charity

This picture was painted in Antwerp soon after Van Dyck's return from Italy in 1627. It reveals the influence of Titian and of contemporary Italian painters such as Guido Reni. Charity is the most important of the three Christian virtues: Faith, Hope and Charity. Here Van Dyck depicts Charity as a loving mother, with a protective arm around one infant while two others embrace her.
