Portrait of Philips Lucasz.
Philips Lucaszoon was a senior official with the Dutch East India Company. He had returned to the Netherlands in 1633. Rembrandt painted this portrait shortly before Philips left for Batavia (Java), where he died a few years later. The Dutch oval frame dates from about 1690-1700. The portrait might have been cut down from a rectangle to an oval at about the same time.
