Tavern Scene

Like Teniers, Brouwer specialised in rowdy scenes of peasant life, which were popular with elite collectors in Antwerp. In this raucous tavern scene, a woman fends off the unwelcome sexual advances of a drunken man, to the amusement of several onlookers. Other artists greatly admired Brouwer's technical virtuosity: both Rembrandt and Rubens collected his work.
