Lady Elizabeth Thimbelby and her Sister
This double portrait was probably painted around the time of Elizabeth's wedding to Sir John Thimbelby. Wearing a saffron-coloured gown - thought to be the colour worn by brides in antiquity - she receives flowers from Cupid, the winged god of love. Her sister Dorothy stands at her side, modestly raising her veil (a symbol of chastity) with her hand.
