Adriana van Heusden and Daughter at the Fishmarket

De Witte was primarily an architectural painter, but also made portraits and genre scenes. While he lived with the Van Heusden family in their home in Amsterdam (1658-63), he exchanged paintings including this portrait-for food, lodging and a stipend. The dating is based on the fact that Amsterdam's New Fishmarket opened in early 1661.
