Portrait of Jan de Reus

Jan de Reus was a Rotterdam silk merchant. He was burgomaster of Rotterdam eight times, and a director of the Dutch East India Company from 1658. This is one of a series of portraits of directors of the Dutch East India Company. Maes, who trained with Rembrandt, specialised in domestic scenes during the first half of his career. He turned to portraits from about 1656.
