An Astronomer

Bol was a pupil of Rembrandt in the 1630s; like him, Bol painted portraits and historical subjects, but in a smoother, more elegant style. The celestial and terrestrial globes identify this figure as an astronomer. His meditative pose seems to express an awareness of the futility of earthly study.
