Portrait of a Boy aged 8
Bol studied with Rembrandt in Amsterdam in the late 1630s, but later developed a bold, colourful style more attuned to the changing tastes of an affluent merchant class. Full-length portraits the size of life were quite rare in 17th-century Holland, suggesting that this disarmingly solemn and self-assured boy enjoyed high social standing.
