A Man and a Woman seated by a Virginal
Music often serves as a metaphor for love in Dutch painting. In this richly coloured work, Metsu depicts a young woman passing a piece of music to a man, who in turn offers her a glass of wine. The inscriptions on the lid of the virginal come from the Psalms, and may be intended as a wry commentary on this gently flirtatious encounter.
