The Idle Servant

With dishes and pots scattered around her, the sleeping maid is depicted in the traditional pose of idleness. Her mistress seems more amused than angry, however, even as the cat steals food from the top of the cupboard. Maes used a contemporary Dutch home as the setting for his moralising theme, contrasting the disorderly kitchen with the refined company in the next room.
