Responding to the complaints of his disciples, Christ justified his blessing of children with the words: 'Suffer the little children... to come unto me, for of such is the kingdom of heaven.' (Matthew 19; Mark 10). The implied message that heaven belongs to innocent children is underscored by the small child in the foreground.
