Portrait of a Poet

This melancholic young man holding a book has long been assumed to be a poet. His head is framed by laurel (the traditional crown for a poet). The painting probably dates from 1516 when the poem Orlando Furioso was published to immediate success. It has therefore been thought to represent the poem's author, Ludovico Ariosto (1474-1533).
