Saint Jerome

Saint Jerome is shown as a penitent in the wilderness. He gazes up at a vision of the crucified Christ (now cut from the top). Beside him are books and a cardinal's hat, reminders of his scholarship and authority. The lion from whose paw he removed a thorn skulks nearby. The unknown donor kneels in the right background with a Franciscan friar, possibly Saint Francis.
