The Virgin and Child with Saints Jerome and Dominic
The Virgin Mary, seated in a landscape, feeds Jesus (this is echoed in the tree above by a bird carrying a worm to its young). The figure walking with an ass on the hill behind her may be Joseph. Saint Jerome is shown twice: in peni tence, on the left, and deep inside his cave in the background, his devoted lion protecting its entrance. Saint Dominic is dressed in the habit of the Dominican Order and holds a lily. Behind him is a hospital, perhaps reflecting his charity.
The predella (the area below the main altarpiece) shows the dead body of Christ, supported by Joseph of Arimathea with saints Francis and Mary Magdalene lamenting to either side.
The altarpiece was painted for a burial chapel in the new church of San Pancrazio, Florence.
