The Holy Family
Signorelli was active in Central Italy and is thought to have been a pupil of Piero della Francesca. This depiction of the holy family centres on Mary about to suckle the Christ Child, an image known as Virgo Lactans. The strawberries the infant holds may refer to his fruitful and righteous life, or to the blood associated with his later suffering, or indeed to both.
