'The Manchester Madonna'

This unfinished and very sculptural painting shows Michelangelo's traditional Florentine training with visible, very controlled underdrawing and piecemeal execution. The Child looks at a book, while the angels contemplate a scroll, both of which probably carry prophecy of Christ's death. The young Baptist gazes inward in possible awareness of the future.
