Saints John the Baptist and Lawrence
Nine cranes stand in a dawn landscape. One, in the foreground of the right-hand panel, holds a stone. According to legend the vigilant crane stood guard at night. If it fell asleep it would drop the stone and waken. In the top right of the other panel a fox prowls.
The coat of arms is that of the Florentine bishop Benedetto Pagagnotti who owned the altarpiece for which these shutters were made. The vigilant crane was his personal emblem.
