Mater Dolorosa; Christ Crowned with Thorns

These pictures of the mourning Virgin and Christ crowned with thorns form a pair or diptych, used for devotional contemplation. Details such as the figures' tears were exquisitely painted. These compositions must have been in demand, as they were often repeated in the workshop of Dirk Bouts.
