As its title suggests (the Latin term ex-voto means 'according to a vow'), this painting was executed as an act of thanksgiving to God for the miraculous recovery of the artist's daughter, a nun in the Port-Royal convent in Paris. De Champaigne presented this work to the convent in the same year.

Comme l'indique son titre (Ex-voto, « suivant le vœu fait » en latin), ce tableau a été exécuté par l'artiste en action de grâce, c'est-à-dire en reconnaissance envers Dieu, après la guérison miraculeuse de sa fille, religieuse au couvent de Port-Royal de Paris.
