Prince Ferdinand Philippe, the eldest son and heir of King Louis Philippe (reigned 1830-1848), was a popular figure and an important art patron of the period. Ingres designed the stained glass windows for the chapel commemorating the prince's accidental death, shortly after the completion of this portrait.
Fils aîné et héritier de Louis-Philippe I (roi des Français de 1830 à 1848), Ferdinand-Philippe était une figure populaire et un important mécène des artistes de son temps. Ingres conçut le modèle des vitraux de la chapelle commémorant la mort accidentelle du prince, survenue peu après l'achèvement de ce portrait.
