During his training in the studio of Botticelli (1445-1510), Filippino Lippi made several paintings of the Virgin and Child in which he boldly endeavoured to show the Child in movement, sometimes in contorted poses. The pomegranate, associated with death since antiquity, symbolises the future fate of Jesus.
