The Virgin Mary presents the sleeping Jesus to the infant Saint John, who kneels in worship. Jesus's sleep foreshadows the Passion, also alluded to by the cross of Saint John and the veil, which symbolises the shroud. The painting was long attributed to Raphael (1483-1520).
