Kreuzigung mit dem hl. Hieronymus

In diesem ergreifenden Bild wird die Kreuzigung durch die Einbeziehung des Heiligen Hieronymus als eine Inszenierung des geschriebenen Wortes dargestellt. Der Kirchenvater erscheint etwas distanziert von dem vorliegenden Ereignis und liest es offenbar aus seiner Bibelübersetzung. Getreu dem Bericht der Evangelien hat David ein angemessenes Gefühl für Zeit und Raum vermittelt. Der Himmel ist im Moment des Todes Christi auf Golgatha (wörtlich „der Ort des Schädels“) verdunkelt, und die heilige Stadt Jerusalem mit ihrer markanten Felsendomkirche bildet den Hintergrund.

The Church Father is shown as somewhat detached from the event at hand, apparently reading about it from his translation of the Bible. True to the account of the Gospels, David has provided an appropriate sense of time and space. The sky is darkened at the moment of Christ's death on Golgotha (literally, "the place of the skull"), and the holy city of Jerusalem with its prominent Church of the Dome of the Rock forms the backdrop.
