Auf ein Bild in halber Länge reduziert und in eine häusliche Umgebung gestellt, wird die Komposition noch weiter verändert durch die Hinzufügung von Joseph. Der Wein und die Früchte auf dem Sims im Vordergrund verweisen auf die Menschwerdung und das Opfer Christi. Als Teil des Alltags präsentiert, zeugen sie auch vom aufkommenden Genre der Stilllebenmalerei. Die Kombination aus alltäglicher häuslicher Intimität und symbolischer Bedeutung muss eine Massenanziehungskraft gehabt haben, da viele Variationen dieses Gemäldes für den Verkauf auf dem freien Markt hergestellt wurden.
