In the sixteenth century, the four panels, arranged in pairs one above the other, flanked the main painting, now lost, on the high altar in S. Apollonia, a Benedictine convent church in Florence that was completed to designs by Michelangelo. Granacci met Michelangelo when they were both apprentices in Domenico Ghirlandaio's workshop and remained friends with him for the rest of his life. John the Baptist and Apollonia appear as patron saints of both the city and the convent, Jerome is reputed to have inspired a number of women to enter monastic life, and Mary Magdalene complements the pictorial agenda as an ambassador of the Resurrection.
