The Virgin and Child enthroned, surrounded by six saints (sacra conversazione), appear in the new type of a square altar panel with a unitary picture field (pala quadrata). The symmetrical figure composition recalls Fra Angelico; details such as the hands, eyes and gold ornaments reveal a knowledge of Fra Filippo Lippi's works. The prominently placed founder of the order, Giovanni Gualberto, on the right in the foreground, suggests that the panel was created for a Vallombrosan monastery. The decoration on Saint Lawrence's robe in the shape of three diamond rings-a Medici emblem-indicates that it was commissioned by a member of the Medici family.
