Apollo pursuing Daphne

The youthful Apollo is pursuing Daphne, a nymph with whom he has fallen in love. Here she shuns him and cries out for help to her father, the river god Peneus, who turns her into a laurel bush. Following this episode, Apollo took to wearing a laurel wreath and declared that triumphant Roman generals should do the same.
