The Coronation of the Virgin

The Virgin is being crowned Queen of Heaven by angels. Usually she is depicted being crowned by Christ and God the Father. The painting may, therefore, also represent her Assumption into heaven. It is the finest of several versions of this composition that Reni painted. The simple gilt frame was carved in Italy in about 1600.
