Anne, 2nd Countess of Albemarle

The 57-year-old countess is engaged in 'knotting', a pursuit similar to crochet. She holds a shuttle in her right hand, ready to pass through the loop of thread made with her left hand. A cord with knots resulted, which could be used to decorate fabric. The pale appearance of the countess's face is a result of the fading of the red pigment that Reynolds used for his flesh colouring.
