The Comte de Vaudreuil
In this imposing portrait, designed to emphasise its sitter's wealth and status, the Comte de Vaudreuil (1740-1817) points at a map of Saint-Domingue (now Haiti and the Dominican Republic). His father was governor of the island, and the Comte earned substantial income from its slave-run plantations.
