Young Spartans Exercising

Girls and boys prepare to wrestle, watched by their mothers and by Lycurgus, the legislator of ancient Sparta. The subject is from Greek history and the frieze-like composition recalls classical reliefs. However, there are no obvious classical symbols and the Spartan boys were modelled on youths from Montmartre in Paris.
