Weymouth Bay: Bowleaze Cove and Jordan Hill

The view is towards the west across Bowleaze Cove, part of Weymouth Bay in Dorset. Constable spent his honeymoon near Weymouth in the autumn of 1816. The picture was probably intended as a finished oil painting rather than a sketch, but was left incomplete. The sand is represented by the unpainted primed canvas.
