Oedipus and the Sphinx
Deep in a cave the ancient Greek hero Oedipus confronts the mythological beast the Sphinx who poses a riddle that he must solve or lose life. When be does so, Oedipus wins the kingdom of Thebes and marries Queen Jocasta, later revealed to be his mother. Ingres often returned to this troubling theme.
