The Apotheosis of the Duke of Buckingham
Powerful and unpopular, George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham (1592-1628), was a favourite of kings James I and Charles I. In this sketch for a ceiling at his London residence, Buckingham is borne aloft by Minerva, goddess of wisdom, and Mercury, god of eloquence, while Envy tries to pull him down.
