Portrait of the Infanta Isabella

Isabella Clara Eugenia (1566-1633) was the daughter of Philip II of Spain. A portrait of her husband Albert, Archduke of Austria, forms a 'pendant' to this work. After Albert's death in 1621 Isabella was appointed governor of the Netherlands. Rubens, who was her court painter, became then a close adviser to Isabella.
