The Judgement of Paris
Homer's Iliad tells the story of the wedding of Peleus and Thetis at which the quarrel over who was the fairest of the goddesses had taken place. In the foreground Paris hands Venus the golden apple marked 'to the fairest'. Her rivals were Juno, on the left, and Minerva, on the right. Paris's choice eventually led to the outbreak of the Trojan War.
